Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

Each year more than 3,200 babies are born at CAMC Women and Children's Hospital. Hundreds of those babies spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit. The NICU also cares for babies born at other hospitals across southern West Virginia. In 2003, the NICU cared for 560 patients.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a 26-bed Level III ICU specializing in the care of premature babies and sick newborns. Primary nursing is provided by 72 registered nurses. Developmental supportive care is provided for all patients. There are six neonatologists, one of whom is in-house 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Services are provided by RNs, neonatologists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers and psychologists.

We have two pediatric surgeons who perform many types of surgeries, including laproscopic procedures.

Transport service to and from referring hospitals is provided by NICU transport nurses for neonates and infants younger than one year of age. The nurses lead the transport team and utilize ambulance, helicopter and fixed-wing modes of transportation.

A follow-up clinic is offered for our patients who have been discharged from Women and Children's Hospital.This service is provided by our neonatologists.
