For the community

CAMC is a nonprofit hospital system. Creative state-of-the-art programs and services are available to the community because CAMC reinvests finances, time and talents to serve the community - particularly the needs of the low income, elderly and other vulnerable persons.

Terms used to describe CAMC’s value to the community include:

Safety net
This means that CAMC cares for the most ill patients who otherwise would have to leave the state for medical care. Many smaller, rural hospitals refer patients to CAMC for safety net services including the highest-level trauma, newborn intensive care and pediatric intensive care.

Tertiary
This refers to a level of specialty medical care that usually is available only in large medical care institutions. These services are not widely available in smaller facilities because they are not economically feasible. CAMC is the major tertiary care medical center for southern West Virginia.

Teaching
As Southern West Virginia 's largest teaching hospital, CAMC prepares medical students, physicians in residency training and students in dozens of other health care fields to care for West Virginians. Nearly 50 percent of the physicians practicing at CAMC received training here. Nearly 50 percent of CAMC residency program graduates establish a practice or continue their training in West Virginia.
