About us

As Charleston Area Medical Center volunteers, our mission is to serve as support for patients, families and hospital staff, and to provide a caring, comforting and courteous environment.

Making a difference

Volunteers make a difference, and CAMC volunteers make a difference every day.  Each volunteer is a valuable resource to the department in which they serve.  Volunteers offer support and time to patients and staff, making a stay at CAMC a more pleasant experience. In 2008, our volunteers contributed more than 29,000 combined hours to our three hospitals.

In a variety of ways

Volunteers may not perform clinical duties, however volunteers are qualified for an assortment of other helpful tasks.

CAMC volunteer positions serve CAMC General, CAMC Memorial and CAMC Women and Children’s hospitals in patient areas, public areas and in office settings.  Volunteers assist in departments such as sports medicine, renal transplant and neonatal intensive care (NICU).  They meet and greet patients and the public in places such as the flower desk at each hospital, General’s cheer cart and the volunteer office.   Volunteers can also be found behind the scenes assisting with projects and tasks in areas such as human resources, pharmacy or the Health Information Center.

A few key areas that we have a current need for volunteers:

-                     Flower desk

-                     Mail desk

-                     Cheer cart

CAMC Memorial Hospital

Auxiliary

The purpose of the auxiliary is to render assistance to the hospitals and carry out projects that might improve patient care and morale.  Each CAMC facility has its own auxiliary and board.

Through the years each auxiliary has donated an enormous amount of time and effort to CAMC.  In addition to serving as volunteers through out our hospitals, many auxiliary members help in fundraising efforts through activities such as book, jewelry or uniform sales at their respective hospitals. Monies raised at these events and through other opportunities support the needs of the hospital.  Examples of items recently purchased through the auxiliary to improve patient and visitor experiences include new rocking chairs and specialized cribs for the NICU at Women and Children’s; a new freezer and refrigerator for Memorial’s pharmacy; booklets and education materials for General’s palliative care and pastoral care departments.

To learn more about the auxiliaries at CAMC General, CAMC Memorial or CAMC Women and Children’s hospitals, please contact the volunteer services director at (304) 388-3779.
