Bone Density (DEXA) scan

A simple scan can help diagnose osteoporosis before a fracture happens.

Osteoporosis mainly affects women after menopause and can cause a loss of bone mass, which makes your bones prone to breaking and fracturing easily. A DEXA scan is a quick, painless test that helps diagnose osteoporosis and can help assess your risk for developing it.

Bone density testing is recommended if:

  • You are a post-menopausal woman who is not taking estrogen
  • You have a personal or maternal history of hip fracture
  • You are a smoker
  • You have diabetes, liver or kidney disease
  • You have a thyroid condition, or
  • You take medications that can cause bone loss.

If any of these apply to you, you should talk to your doctor or other healthcare provider about getting a bone density test if you’ve never had one.

CAMC offers DEXA scans at four convenient locations:

  • The Breast Center
  • CAMC Imaging Center – Kanawha City
  • CAMC Imaging Center – Southridge
  • Teays Valley Hospital
