Kidney Transplantation Program

Kidney Transplantation at Charleston Area Medical Center is one treatment option available to patients with end-stage renal disease. For both pediatric and adult patients, it holds the promise of a far more normal lifestyle with fewer restrictions than dialysis.

More than 650 kidney transplants have been performed at CAMC since the program was established in 1987. Each year, CAMC provides 90 percent of the kidney transplants in West Virginia. According to the United Network of Organ Sharing Center-Specific Report, CAMC demonstrates excellent renal graft and patient survival rates. Network statistics showed our center to have a renal graft survival rate of 94 percent one year after transplantation, compared to the national average of 88 percent. CAMC also has an exceptional patient one-year graft survival rate of 98 percent, compared to the national average of 93 percent. In addition, our program provides post-transplant care to more than 400 patients using an interdisciplinary team of professionals.

In affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, our team includes two transplant surgeons, four certified clinical transplant coordinators, a dietitian, a social worker and the attending nephrologists. Consulting services also are available from a certified diabetes educator and a clinical pharmacist.

The Kidney Transplant program is located at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital campus. For more information, call (304) 388-7823 or 1-800-346-6233.
