Health
care is in Elizabeth McDavid’s blood. Her father was a doctor in Elkins.
When she graduated high school, she came to Charleston for nursing school.
She became an RN in 1924 and hasn’t slowed down much since.
Elizabeth McDavid turned 100 years old on Monday, Jan. 26. At her birthday party, Charleston Mayor Danny Jones declared Jan. 26 as Elizabeth McDavid Appreciation Day. In addition to the cake, punch and cards, McDavid received a gift from the governor. She continues to be involved with the hospital, volunteering once a week at the flower and information desk at CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital. In fact, McDavid drives herself to the hospital. “She has a really great sense of humor, but she’s also very serious when it comes to our job,” said Dorothy Ashmore who volunteers each Monday with McDavid. “Elizabeth is always pleasant and encouraging to me and the other volunteers,” said Peggy L. Fultz, director of volunteer services. “She has motivated many volunteers and continues to walk the talk. She is truly a blessing to be around.” CAMC has around 175 volunteers, more in the summer and during breaks when students are available. Volunteers work in just about every area of the hospital from helping patients to filing paperwork. |
