Volunteer of the year

Mary Hafer.

At Charleston Area Medical Center, volunteers are an essential part of our team.  They are one of our most valuable resources, contributing services to other staff members that maybe unable to provide.  Volunteers offer support and time to patients and staff, making a stay at CAMC a more pleasant experience.

Mary Hafer was the 2003 volunteer winner in the southwestern district and also the overall winner of the volunteer of the year award, presented at the annual Auxiliary West Virginia Hospital Association held at the Greenbrier Resort. One of many nominees, Mary has as been an integral part of Charleston Area Medical Center for 20 years, accumulating more than 6,500 hours of service.

Her first assignment as a volunteer was patient mail delivery. After delivering mail for three years, Hafer moved to the flower desk and later to the gift shop where she served for 14 years.

Hafer’s life of compassionate care is not confined to her volunteer work at the hospital. Her interest in people is her life; she is very much involved in the life of her church and community. She is an active member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church where she has taught Sunday school, women’s circle groups and been a leader of other programs in her church. She also helped establish the Elk River Community and Education Center, which provides lunches for senior citizens, a science and computer room and playground summer programs for all ages.

Hafer is a member of the local school improvement council at Herbert Hoover High School and the local middle school as well as serving as a mentor to elementary school children in her community. One child that Hafer worked with came from a very troubled background and consequently was not doing well in his studies. Through her faithful involvement in the life of this young
man by showing him love and kindness, never missing a holiday with a special gift and attending events in which he was involved, he was greatly supported and became a better student.

Elected to the auxiliary board in 1984, Hafer continues to serve in that capacity. She has held the office of president, and is currently chairwoman for special fund raising. During her 12-year tenure in that position, the auxiliary has raised well over $150,000 through various fund raising events.

Mary has one daughter, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
