Alicia Swearingen, respiratory therapist, was nominated for being in the right place at the right time, for the right patient and family.
The cardiopulmonary ICU had a patient with cystic fibrosis who was at the end of life. He was only in his 20s. The patient was unresponsive when Swearingen intervened to provide patient care.
She comforted the patient and family, cried with them and related to them, because Swearingen also lost a sister to this same disease. She shared her story with the family helping them cope with their loss. In fact, that loss is what inspired Alicia to become a respiratory therapist.
The family said Swearingen was an angel and comforted them in a way nobody else could.
