Kim Jones, Haley Ross, Ashley Shamblen and Lore Wilkes from the CAMC Cancer Center were recognized for the care and extra TLC provided to a patient and her toddler.
The patient was pregnant and already had a 3-year-old child when she learned she had breast cancer. She needed chemotherapy but had extreme difficulty with transportation and child care, so she wasn't coming for treatments.
This put her at great risk. The breast navigator found out why the patient wasn't keeping her appoitnments and approached co-workers. Staff paid out-of-pocket for Uber for transportation and took turns during their lunches to provide care for the 3-year-old because the patient did not have a sitter.
They provided snacks and entertainment for the toddler while the mother was able to receive treatment. Several staff members were involved, offering their time and money.
