The humanitarian category of Heart and Soul recognizes employees for acts of kindness and charity that promote the well-being or improve the lives of someone in our community. It also includes actions of bravery, courage and selflessness.

The surgical vascular intermediate care unit had a patient who had been cared for by many staff members for several weeks. The patient was near the end of her life. One of her last requests was to have a weiner roast with her family.

Due to her condition, she was unable to be discharged so the staff got creative. Staff from the unit and some respiratory therapists who also had provided care to the patient brought in food and decorations.

The patient's family along with family from out of town attended. Some members of the unit came in on their day off to help, and employees from other departments who had cared for the patient attended and celebrated with the family. The patient and family were so appreciative to have this last celebration of life and togetherness.

The patient passed away the following week.
