The most popular New Year's resolutions are to lose weight, exercise more, stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol and get out of debt.

About 80 percent of people who make resolutions at the beginning of the year stop by the middle of February.

Peggy Perdue, clinical psychologist at the CAMC Weight Loss Center says to start by making a plan. Write down your goals so you remember them and they remain top of mind.

Here are some other tips Perdue offers to help you succeed in the coming year:

  • Set reasonable goals that are specific and measurable.
  • Don't overwhelm yourself with too many goals.
  • Set smaller goals that build into bigger goals.
  • Follow up and track your progress.
  • Reward yourself as you make progress.
  • Don't quit if you stumble. Stay positive and get back on track.
