Sometimes inpatients with limited transportation have to wait a long time after discharge for a ride home. That's why CAMC started the CAMC Uber, or CUber, service in December 2018.

CUber is available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily to help transport discharged patients at no cost to the patient.

To use CUber, the patient must meet the following criteria:

  • Anyone that could go home in a personal vehicle, with family or in a bus/taxi
  • He/she must be able to ambulate on his/her own without assistance
  • Does NOT require a wheelchair
  • He/she can regulate their own oxygen AND has a personal supply with them at the facility to use during transport
  • Discharged patient MUST be wearing more than a hospital gown (fully covered) when leaving the facility
  • If the patient is a minor, a parent or guardian must accompany the child for the duration of the transport
  • Transport destination is no more than 30 miles of the referring facility

Staff should use the ambulance request order in Cerner and make a note in the comments that the request is for CAMC Uber. Refer to the SBAR sent in Manager Weekly Dec. 9 for details.

Aside from being a helpful benefit to the patient, the service is also a tool to help nursing units with the flow of discharged patients and free up HealthTeam's ambulances for more emergent transports.
