The American College of Cardiology has recognized Charleston Area Medical Center for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients who come to a cardiac cath lab for care, including diagnostic catheterizations and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures. CAMC was awarded Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI in June based on rigorous on-site evaluation of the staff's ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who come to the cardiac cath lab.

Percutaneous coronary intervention is also known as coronary angioplasty. It is a non-surgical procedure that opens narrowed or blocked coronary arteries with a balloon to relieve symptoms of heart disease or reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack.

Hospitals that have achieved this level of accreditation have established a standardized process for patients undergoing catheterization to ensure patient safety and quality outcomes. In order to become accredited, these facilities have proven proficiency in managing patient sedation, infection control and other variables within the cath lab, as well as considerations related to the transfer of the patient to a recovery unit to monitor and track complications. The accrediting process emphasizes communication with the patient and the patient's family, and improves the overall transition of care upon discharge.

"As an ACC-accredited facility, CAMC physicians and staff have shown their desire to achieve best practices, better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients in our cath labs," said Don Lilly, MD, associate chief medical officer at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians and other administrative staff that support the efforts leading to improved patient outcomes.

"CAMC has demonstrated its commitment to providing southern West Virginia and surrounding areas with excellent heart care," said Phillip D. Levy, MD, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. "ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award CAMC with Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI."

Hospitals receiving Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI from the ACC must take part in a multifaceted clinical process that involves identifying areas for improvement, developing and implementing an action plan, a rigorous on-site review and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the care of cath lab patients.

"This accreditation illustrates our commitment to positive patient outcomes, as well as our dedication to providing evidence-based quality initiatives, clinical guidelines and best practices to continually improve patient care," Lilly said. "It is an affirmation of what our community has known for over 50 years - CAMC is the leader in cardiac care in our region and our standards are second to none."
