Gastroenterology involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system. At CAMC, the majority of endoscopy procedures to diagnose problems in these areas, and other areas that require the use of an endoscope, are outpatient. Therefore, a thorough assessment including a brief history, vital signs and educational background of the patient is necessary.

Patients are instructed on intra- and post- operative procedures prior to each case. During recovery, all patients are monitored and observed for tolerance of the procedure. Discharge instructions are given to all outpatients and their significant other prior to leaving the department. During each procedure, the nursing staff collaborates with the medical staff to provide patients with competent, complete quality care.
