September's Volunteer Spotlight features Jonette Kirkland, a creative arts/hospitality volunteer at CAMC Teays Valley hospital.
- What is your name?
JK: Joanette Kirkland
- What is your position?
JK: Creative Arts/Hospitality at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital.
- How long have you been a volunteer?
JK: About 18 months.
- What do you love about being a volunteer?
JK: I feel that I am actually helping others. Whether introducing them to a new hobby, providing something to distract patients from their situation, just having a nice chat that allows the patient to open up a bit and brighten their day, or leaving them with no more than a couple of peppermints, I know it helps.
- What makes CAMC a great place to be a volunteer?
JK: Every trip through the hospital I get continual smiles, constant positive comments and "thank yous", and inquiries about what I’m doing.
- What advice would you give future CAMC volunteers?
JK: Not my own, but one of my favorite quotes: “The heart that gives, gathers.” Always put your heart first.
