CAMC Weight Loss Center Earns National Re-Accreditation

Patients seeking surgical treatment for severe obesity and its related conditions have a choice for receiving treatment from a nationally-accredited program that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care at the CAMC Weight Loss Center. The Center was recently re-accredited as a Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Care under the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) following an onsite evaluation of staffing, training, facility infrastructure and protocols for care, verifying its ability to support patients with severe obesity.

MBSAQIP standards ensure that bariatric surgical patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term successes.

"Obesity is an epidemic that is far more dangerous than many people realize because it increases the risks of many other serious health problems, like developing type II diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and arthritis," said Robert Shin, MD, medical director of the CAMC Weight Loss Center. "Effectively battling obesity requires more than surgery. This accreditation demonstrates that CAMC provides the highest levels of effective, comprehensive therapies to not only help patients lose weight, but also improve their overall health and live longer."

In the United States, about 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health, and the numbers continue to increase. The CAMC Weight Loss Center offers comprehensive weight loss options – including medically supervised weight loss and bariatric surgery. Patients benefit from the care of a multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, nurses, dietitians, exercise physiologist and psychologist. If the team determines that bariatric surgery is the most effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of obesity-related health problems, the Center offers a full range of weight loss surgery options, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric bypass, Lap Band®, Duodenal Switch, ORBERA™ non-surgical balloon and revisional weight loss surgery.

The CAMC Weight Loss Center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for continuous quality improvement.

"This accreditation is a credit to our outstanding team," said Samuel Rossi, MD, bariatric surgeon at the Weight Loss Center. "We are dedicated to providing personalized care and comprehensive support services that truly help our patients succeed in improving their health in the long term."

The first step in determining if weight loss surgery is right for any patient is by evaluating their medical condition and overall well-being.
