June 27 marked National HIV Testing Day (NHTD), an annual observance dedicated to promoting HIV testing and awareness across the United States. NHTD emphasizes the importance of knowing one's HIV status as a crucial step toward prevention, early detection and access to treatment.
This year, the CAMC Ryan White Program joined the Greater Than HIV initiative, which has provided more than 93,000 HIV/STD rapid tests since its launch in 2011 and set up testing sites at three local Walgreens locations: West Side of Charleston, East End of Charleston and Elkview.
Ryan White staff at these locations provided rapid fingerstick testing for HIV, Hepatitis C and syphilis, along with the latest information on prevention and treatment options, including referrals for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and FDA-approved medications that are highly effective in aiding prevention.
Overall, 25 tests were completed, and staff provided information to over 100 individuals in the Charleston area.
"Our program and staff strive to help at-risk individuals overcome personal barriers to receive and stay in care,” said Christine Teague, PharmD, Program Director, CAMC Ryan White Program. "We want to reach people who need care, where they are.”
The CAMC Ryan White Program has enrolled over 1,200 individuals in the program since its inception in 1995. It covers 19 counties in southern West Virginia and offers a large range of services for individuals at risk for, or are infected with, HIV.
