Rachael Adkins is a nurse in the Pediatric ENT office.
She was nominated for her forward thinking in getting a patient’s images across the country for their care.
A patient needed to see a cancer surgeon in Oregon that was closer to his family. All his imaging was done at CAMC.
Adkins saved his scans and imaging onto discs and mailed them to his house. But when he got to Oregon, he realized he’d left the discs here in West Virginia.
Adkins was able to set up institutional image sharing on very short notice between the Oregon hospital and CAMC. This way, the surgeons had immediate access to the patients scans to review.
Without her exceptional efforts, the surgeons would not have had his scans on the day of the patient’s appointment. They would’ve had to repeat the imaging, which would have delayed his treatment.
Also thanks to Adkins’s efforts, CAMC now has a process to share patients’ images between hospitals in the future.
