April and Sherry

Volunteers are typically quick to let us know if they can’t make their scheduled shift.

One of our volunteers, who always is diligent about calling when she can’t serve, unexpectedly did not show up for her shift recently. When Sherry Combs, CAMC General Hospital Volunteer and Auxiliary President noticed the volunteer’s absence, she immediately reached out to volunteer coordinator, April Tyree.

The two began calling and trying to get in touch with the volunteer. When there was no response, knowing this volunteer was elderly and lived alone, they grew concerned and called 911 to request a well-being check.

EMS entered the home and discovered the volunteer at the bottom of the stairs. She had fallen three days earlier and was badly injured.

Thanks to the quick thinking and persistence of these ladies, the volunteer was rescued, and her life may have been saved.
